Spotting the early warning symptoms of gum disease is crucial in treating the illness. As the disease evolves, it can turn serious, and lead to the eventual destabilization of your gums and cause your teeth to completely fall out. However, the effects of gum disease can be reversed if the disease is caught early and treatment is administered.

Earlier stages of the disease, known as gingivitis, may be more difficult to detect, as the changes to your gums are small. Look for gum tissue that appears to be off color or swollen, as well as a slight downturn from the teeth. As the disease grows, the gums can recede far enough from the teeth that a tooth’s root may be seen.

As the disease progresses even further, significant symptoms can occur, including loose teeth, sensitivity in the teeth, excessive bleeding, and tooth loss. If you regularly have bad breath that does not seem to respond to treatments such as daily brushing and flossing or using mouthwash, it may be the result of gum disease.
