A bone graft is an important and often necessary treatment to restore the strength of the jaw. If you are preparing for such a procedure, you’ll want to be ready for a restful speedy recovery. To help you with that process in Conroe, Texas, our Montgomery County Periodontal Associates dental team is pleased to supply the following instructions:

1. Stop any bleeding and reduce swelling by holding a clean gauze pad over the surgical area. Apply force to the pad for about an hour; then discard it. You’ll also want to ice the area by cooling it with an ice pack in 30-minute intervals for the first 24 to 48 hours.

2. Use the medication that Dr. Miles Mason has prescribed to help with the pain and possible infections. These may include pain medications or antibiotics. Make sure you closely follow the instructions regarding timing and dosage.

3. For the first 24 hours after your surgery, eat only cool, soft foods and drink plenty of liquids. While you are eating, chew your food in a different part of your mouth from the graft site. When drinking, avoid using a straw, as this can dislodge the blood clot in your mouth.

4. Give yourself the opportunity to rest for the first two or three days. This means staying home from work, exercise or strenuous activity. Keep in mind that your normal caloric intake is typically reduced and you may be severely dehydrated.

If you follow these steps, you’ll be on your way toward shining oral health, and you will be ready for a dental implant or any other treatment that can help you restore your smile.
